Website Backup Checklist
Confirm website files, databases, offsite copies, retention, access and restore testing.

A plugin message saying “backup complete” does not prove that every required component is present or recoverable. Start by identifying what would be needed to rebuild the site on a clean environment.
Include the Required Components
- Website application and uploaded media files.
- Database content and configuration.
- Custom code, server rules and scheduled tasks.
- DNS records and domain ownership details.
- Licence, integration and secure credential-recovery information.
- A record of compatible software versions where relevant.
Protect the Backup Process
- Store at least one copy separately from the live hosting account.
- Restrict deletion and administrative access.
- Use multi-factor authentication where supported.
- Monitor failures and storage capacity.
- Choose retention that covers accidental deletion discovered later.
- Document who receives alerts and who can authorise a restore.
Run Restore Tests
Restore to a protected test location, verify pages and data, and record the result. Test again after major platform changes and at a frequency that matches the site’s business impact.
Practical note: A host snapshot can be useful, but it should not be the only recovery option if the same account or provider failure could make it unavailable.
