Small Business Website Brief Checklist
Prepare the goals, audience, pages, content, features and ownership information a website provider needs to quote clearly.

A brief does not need design jargon. Its job is to give each supplier the same business problem and boundaries so proposed scope, timing and price can be compared fairly.
Business Goal & Audience
- What should the website help the business achieve?
- Who is the primary customer or user?
- Which locations, industries or service areas matter?
- What action should a visitor take on each important page?
- Which objections or questions should the site answer?
Pages, Content & Features
- List essential pages and services.
- Identify existing copy, photography, branding and legal text.
- Describe forms, bookings, ecommerce, payments or member areas.
- List systems that need to connect.
- Include accessibility, analytics, SEO and performance expectations.
- Name the people responsible for feedback and approval.
Ownership & Ongoing Care
- Domain registrant and account access.
- Hosting, email and DNS responsibility.
- Licences and renewal costs.
- Backup, update and security responsibilities.
- Training, content updates and post-launch support.
- Export and handover arrangements.
Practical note: Do not send passwords in a website brief. Record account ownership, then use a secure access-sharing process after a provider is selected.
